Quotation:
I've always been the nerdy, geekish outsider who still remembers how a lot of my classmates used to torture me. Buffy made me a stronger person. Growing up, I always felt different from other kids and they would always tease me about my work in commercials or TV as a way of putting me down. All the success that the series - Buffy - has enjoyed has erased a lot of self-doubts that I grew up with. I don't feel like the nerd or the loser any more."
Biography:
Determined and accomplished are two words that best describe Golden Globe nominee Sarah Michelle Gellar. Beginning her career as a child actress, Gellar has remained a leader on the road of success. A veteran of television, theater and the big screen, Gellar was recently seen in the musical comedy “Southland Tales” for director Richard Kelly. The film premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and is now in theatres.
Following THE AIR I BREATHE, Gellar will be seen opposite Lee Pace in The Yari Film Group’s “Possession.” In this thriller, Gellar plays a woman whose life is thrown into chaos after a freak car accident sends her husband and brother-in-law into comas. Possession is slated for release in March 2008.
No stranger to the world of voice over, Gellar recently lent her voice in Liongate’s “Happily N’Ever After,” opposite Sigourney Weaver and Freddie Prinze, Jr. Currently, Gellar can be heard as the voice of ‘April O’Neil’ in Warner Brothers “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
Gellar’s other film credits include “The Grudge,” “The Grudge 2,” “Scooby Doo” and “Scooby Doo: Monsters Unleashed,” “I Know What You Did Last Summmer,” “Scream 2,” “Cruel Intentions,” and “Harvard Man.”
Gellar is best known for her role as ‘Buffy Summers’ in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” She wrapped her seventh and final season of the critically acclaimed drama in May of 2003. However, Gellar’s career in the world of entertainment goes back much farther than “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”--her career has spanned nearly 22 years--quite a feat for a young woman. She won an Emmy in 1994 for her role on the ABC daytime drama “All My Children” and completed classes at PCS in New York one year ahead of schedule.
Gellar has also participated in much off-screen work as an ambassador for the nonprofit organization CARE. In May 2007, Sarah traveled to Guatemala in May 2007 to see for herself CARE's work in Girls' Education. Growing up in a single-parent household with her mother who was a teacher, Gellar feels blessed about her success in life. Today, as a CARE Ambassador, she is particularly impassioned about raising awareness for the plight of young girls in developing countries and helping CARE provide them with the opportunity to go to school. "An educated girl becomes an empowered woman who has more control over her life and well-being of her family," says Gellar. In June 2007, Gellar was a featured speaker at CARE's National Advocacy Conference in Washington, DC. During that time she also advocated on Capitol Hill for the Education for All Act.
In addition to CARE, Sarah is an advocate for breast cancer awar eness and participated in Ford's 2003 'Tied to the Cause' campaign benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She was also an honoree at the 2003 Young Survivors Coalition., has donated her time and talent to the 'Make-a-Wish Foundation' and has spent time in the Dominican Republic working as a volunteer for 'Habitat for Humanity.' She has also helped those affected by the California Fires by visiting shelters and handing out clothing and supplies to families who had lost everything.
Additionally, she has been involved with 'Project Angel Food' for the fight against hunger, the 'Starbright Foundation,' 'Planned Parenthood,' and the 'Los Angeles Free Clinic.'
A New York native, Gellar resides on both coasts.
